Job Description

The Department of Quantitative Health Sciences (QHS) at the Cleveland Clinic seeks candidates for a doctoral-level faculty position at the Assistant or Associate level at the Cleveland, Ohio main campus. An academic faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with experience is available at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. 

This is a full-time collaborative, hard-money position to work closely with clinician investigators in the  Medical Specialties Institute (MSI), one of the 13 Cleveland Clinic Institutes. Applicants should possess methodological expertise in the design and analysis of clinical trials and observational studies that can be used to support research across multiple medical specialties within MSI. These specialties include the Departments of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Rheumatology, Endocrinology, Genetics and Genomics, Kidney Medicine, and Dermatology. The position offers 30% protected time for independent creative scholarly work. The successful candidate will have support from a team of three Master-level statisticians (total of 2 FTE) who currently provide statistical analytic support across various aspects of MSI research. The candidate is expected to guide and mentor team members to provide more focused technical and collaborative support for MSI. Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree with a focus in biostatistics, applied statistics, and/or epidemiology.

They will collaborate on innovative study designs, apply creative analytical methods to tackle complex healthcare challenges, contribute to competitive grant proposals, and support the publication of research in academic, peer-reviewed journals. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to effectively engage with investigators, are crucial. Recent graduates with some experience, as well as individuals with more advanced experience, are encouraged to apply. Rank and compensation will be commensurate with level of experience. 

Medical Specialties Institute clinical investigators are physician scientists, who have over $10M in annual support from federal, state, foundation and industry sponsored sources. Ongoing investigator-initiated projects include clinical outcomes, epidemiology, use of large datasets to model chronic disease outcomes progression and management, development of AI-based predictive models for genetic kidney diagnosis, study of genetic risk factors for melanoma, integration of AI-driven alerts into EPIC to support precision medicine, and trials of CAR-T therapy and other novel treatment approaches for autoimmune disorders. Cleveland Clinic’s BioRepository provides the resources to integrate molecular phenotypes from biological samples with associated health information. The Institute is committed to growing its research portfolio and to developing the careers of medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. 

Cleveland Clinic Research includes a core group of 1,800+ dedicated research personnel and a broader network of physician scientists, investigators and shared resources across the health system. The  Department of Quantitative Health Sciences has 23 faculty and over 132 members and is a multidisciplinary group of biostatisticians, epidemiologists, outcomes researchers, database developers and programmers that conducts translational medical research to improve patient care. Our teams collaborate with clinical investigators on translating clinical questions into testable research hypotheses, designing studies to address the clinical questions, and all aspects of data analysis (data-driven discovery, model building and validation, hypothesis testing, development of new statistical methods). Areas of disciplinary research application include biostatistical methods, clinical trials, population health, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, statistical computing, predictive modeling, and computational biology. Specific job requirements include:  

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Applied Statistics, or related field 

  • Basic to advanced level of collaborative research experience  

  • Experience and interest in working with large data sets, including national repositories and electronic health record databases to understand predictors and outcomes of diseases relevant to specialties within MSI is desirable.     

  • Knowledge and interest in traditional and innovative clinical trial design and analysis 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

  • Desire to conduct and publish independent research 

  • Will work with MSI research leadership to define MSI research priorities and plan for future initiatives  

Preferred but not required: 

  • Experience or interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence 

  • Experience in survey research and study design  

Salary range of this position is 140K to 200K and reflects the anticipated range for new hires. A successful candidate's actual compensation will be determined after taking various factors into consideration, such as the candidate's work history, experience, and skill set. This salary range is not inclusive of the value of Cleveland Clinic's benefits package, which includes among other benefits, healthcare, dental, vision, and retirement. Please note that this is an on-site position.
